Many of you know Captain Mike Vegessi and his wife Kathy who run the Lazybones Fishing Boat. But you may not know about their community spirit, and love of family and sharing their love of fishing.
During the Grand Slam fishing Tournament in July Captain Mike donated 15 spaces for the kids of Camp Soul Grow on Sunday afternoon. They love to fish and when the return to the tent, the excitement continues when they are awarded prizes for their catch! What kid doesn’t like a surprise, being competitive, or winning prizes? Well, one day each month they tell their group on the boat that the contest will happen- it’s a total surprise to the customers. Then, at the end of the day the child with the biggest fish wins! They get a filled tackle box, donated by Johnny’s Tackle, Jim McLoughlin of Geppetto Bros., donates the rod and reel, Local Knit donates the T-shirts, and Chris Gray of Doormat Fluke Rigs.com gives them a special lure.
The kids get so excited and thankful; many of them go to Johnny’s to personally thank him, and
some even come back with their gear to go fishing again. When speaking with the group, it was obvious to me that this small memento in honor of their dear friend and husband brings joy to their lives; through memories of a great man, as well as from sharing and instilling their joy of fishing into the hearts of young children.
