Star Spangled Banner Day Villanelle
Written 3/3/25 by Lawrence Spiro
Reprinted for July 4, 2026, for America’s 250th year national celebration.
America was formed with the common desire that its people may have the freedom to pursue happiness and sustenance. The requirements are simple; honesty, humility, and contribution to the needs of family and state. The word easy does not apply to this quest. It is indeed a firm obligation to fulfill but is available to all people who grasp it. All people can enjoy the fruits of their labor. All people have the inalienable right of self-respect and to pursue a peaceful life. The ensuing poem captures the feelings I have for my home, America.
Fist in the air defiant Fight Fight Fight;
America my home where my heart will stay.
These are the truths as the day follows night.
We are governed by common sense and light
foundation built of free will as we may;
Fist in the air defiant Fight Fight Fight.
In G-d we trust is my divine delight,
everyone is equal in work and pray.
These are the truths as the day follows night.
Imagination has no bounds in flight.
We build our lives in firmament not clay;
Fist in the air defiant Fight Fight Fight.
The road of dreams is paved brilliant and bright,
for all Americans who pledge and say;
These are the truths as the day follows night
Where darkness withdraws covered by the light,
freedom is here and forever to stay;
Fist in the air defiant Fight Fight Fight.
These are the truths as the day follows night.

Believe…by Ethan Bell
Fitness gives my days a rhythm
And a goal a steady beat that helps me find control with every lift
And every mile I go I build my strength and let my confidence grow
For someone like me the gym feels right
A place of focus, purpose and light
Each workout reminds me of what I can achieve
And teaches me to trust what I believe
