Tucked away in the back of Cove Marina in Montauk Harbor, The Cove is a casual waterside eatery offering a family-friendly environment with a full bar, indoor seating overlooking the backyard, and a picture-perfect view. The backyard is dotted with picnic tables for al fresco dining and corn hole. The Cove revives the effortless, breezy vibe of Freda and Skip’s classic Hideaway featuring a flavorful menu that pairs Mexican favorites with fresh seafood and wood-smoked meats.

From steamed clams or mussels, tacos, quesadillas, or nachos, to salads, sandwiches, Mac & Cheese, and BBQ plates—including smoked chicken, ribs, or pulled pork—Chef Shawn Hewitt has created a diverse menu perfect for snacking, sharing, or a full meal. In addition, they offer a kid’s menu and sides that are not to be missed: Mexican Street Corn, Pineapple Jalapeño Slaw, Fresh Cornbread, Rice & Beans… need I say more!

One of our favorites from the ‘Starters’ is the Local Clams steamed in white wine, garlic, butter, fresh thyme, and shallots, all accented by andouille sausage and served with crusty bread for dunking. The Steamed Mussels are also prepared in the same broth but without the sausage, allowing the natural flavor of the mussels to shine. Both dishes are fresh, clean, and delightful. From the Mexican fare, we enjoyed the fresh, crisp, and flavorful Chicken Bacon Quesadilla. Overstuffed with house-smoked chicken, bacon, and jack cheese, then dressed with Pico de Gallo, house-made guacamole, sour cream, and a drizzle of Salsa Taquera, it results in a terrific blend of flavor and texture. Another appetizing option is the nachos. Top them with or without pulled pork or smoked chicken, or keep them vegetarian The crisp tortillas are layered with black beans, melted cheddar, and pickled jalapeños, then topped with fresh Pico de Gallo and house-made guacamole.

Crafted with spiral cavatappi pasta, the rich and comforting Mac & Cheese delivers a cheesy delight in every bite. It’s perfectly portioned to enjoy as a main entrée or as a shared table appetizer, either on its own or upgraded with fresh lobster or savory pulled pork. Our choice of pulled pork infused the dish with a robust, sweet, and smoky flavor profile.

Tacos—including pulled pork, chicken Tinga, grilled shrimp, catch of the day, or vegetarian—are served in pairs on white corn tortillas adorned with cotija cheese, fresh guacamole, and Pico de Gallo. Every taco features unique toppings and sauces designed to elevate the flavor of the protein. Don’t miss the Shrimp Taco, which is generously packed with tender grilled shrimp, crisp cabbage, and a savory, smoky butter sauce. The Shrimp Tostada was a nightly special and another savory shrimp delight. This open-faced, crispy, flat corn tortilla is piled high with refried black beans, large grilled shrimp, fresh lettuce, Pico de Gallo, and guacamole.

The regular sandwich lineup features pulled pork, smoked chicken, fried fish, and the Cove burger. However, we opted for the nightly special: a flawlessly seasoned, thick, and tender broiled cod served on a toasted roll with golden French fries and a zesty, homemade pineapple-jalapeño slaw.

Our final selection was one of the BBQ Platters, which are served with a choice of a side and cornbread. Our choice, the Half Rack of “fall-off-the-bone” ribs, was smoked to perfection and slathered with a tasty BBQ sauce. Be sure to ask your server for the creamy peanut sauce to add an incredible nutty, savory-sweet profile to the barbecue. The sides provided an incredible balance of flavors and textures, with fresh cornbread and sweet butter acting as a classic Southern anchor alongside our choice of the Mexican street corn—gently charred then coated with a creamy, tangy sauce, savory cheese, a dash of Tajín, and fresh lime. Southern cooking done perfectly!

Never too full for an enticing dessert, we were treated by the Chef to his creamy Banana Pudding, blended with white chocolate wafer chips and plated with fresh whipped cream and strawberries. However, for us, the true showstoppers were the warm Stuffed Churros served with vanilla ice cream and strawberries. Featuring a homemade pastry that is deep-fried until golden, coated in sweet cinnamon sugar, and stuffed with Nutella—it’s quite a treat. Be sure to inquire about the dessert options; they are delicious!

Chef Shawn Hewitt is trying something truly creative here in Montauk, serving up fantastic Southern smoky barbecue specialties alongside a tasty lineup of traditional Mexican favorites. With Brie Grimes at the helm, Julie crafting drinks at the bar, and Kasey as our friendly server, The Cove is already on its way to becoming the new go-to spot. Whether you are a local or just visiting, it is an ideal casual spot to gather with family and friends for drinks, apps, or a full meal.
