The action for the 2026 Fishing Season continues and doesn’t disappoint!! WOW! Where do I even start? How about the offshore fishing report being steady pretty much since June! Yellowfin Tuna, Bigeye Tuna, Swordfish, Tilefish have all been providing action and great table fare for those making the journey offshore to the canyons. Now is the time to go “Ball Hopping” for the Dolphin (Mahi Mahi) on the Lobster gear that is strewn all over from 20 miles on out to the Canyons! Not all gear holds these fast biting, hard fighting, delicious fast-growing fish. Mahi are some of the fastest growing fish in the ocean, interesting note, a two-pound Mahi was tagged and released, in just 354 days it was recovered weighing just about 20 pounds! Keep in mind the clothes you wear when you go Dolphin fishing will be your Dolphin fishing attire from then on!! Try to get them into the fish box as quickly as possible, you will figure out why when you go fishing for them! LOL!!
Most of the action has been east Atlantis on out to Hydro’s. But anywhere there is a decent temperature break along with bait and sea mammals in the area, you will probably want to stick it out, don’t get impatient, and the bite will eventually happen. One occasion I started trolling at 5 am, trolled all day never had a bite, but there were three different species of sea mammals hanging in the same area. My chart plotter looked like a NASCAR oval race track. I fought the urge to leave the area…and didn’t. Finally, at 7:30pm, we caught a double header Bigeye Tuna. Then we caught three nice Yellowfins. We stayed there overnight and caught two more big Bigeye Tuna in the morning!! If the sea mammals are staying put, you stay put!!
Back inshore the bottom fishing has been the mainstay being as how the Striped Bass are still vacationing in Mass. & Maine. As this article goes to press we have a big Nor’easter headed our way, that should get the Striped Bass on the move back to Montauk. We have tons of bait here awaiting their arrival! It should be anytime now and the Fall Blitz will be in full swing! Meanwhile the Fluke have been cooperating better and the Black Sea Bass are just about under every rock. Also, now is also time for the giant Porgy. Blackfish season opens October 15th. Regulations are the same as last year: 4 fish per angler, at 16 inches.
