The Age of Innocence is a love story set in New York City during the Gilded Age. In the novel, Newland Archer’s struggles to remain faithful to his beautiful but conventional wife and his desire for her fascinating cousin, the Countess Ellen Olenska. In 1921, Edith Wharton was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Literature for The Age of Innocence.
