The inevitability that Italy would become involved in a war for which it was ill prepared is documented with grace and clarity by one of the twentieth century’s great diarists. Recently discovered in Origo’s archives, this is a gripping account of what Italy and the world underwent as armed conflict was looming. British-born Iris Origo and her husband risked their lives by sheltering local refugees, escaped Allied P.O.W.s and partisans in defiance of Italy’s Fascist regime and Nazi occupation as described in Origo’s War in Val D’Orcia, 1943-1944. Discussion in person at the library and on Zoom. All are welcome.
