Good day and welcome back to the Montauk Fire Department Corner. I hope everyone is having a nice summer and had an enjoyable and safe Fourth of July weekend.

As always, Members of the Montauk Fire Department’s Company No. 4 (EMS) and Company No. 6 (Fire Police) assisted with the smooth running of two of Montauk’s premier triathlons. On June 6th we assisted at the 41st annual Mighty Montauk Triathlon which hosted over 800 participants. On Sunday, July 20th we assisted at the Montauk Lighthouse sprint triathlon which was well attended as well. I am happy that, over the years, the Montauk Fire Department has been able to assist both of these worthwhile Montauk events. Thanks to the members of Companies 4 and 6 for providing EMS services and traffic control.

The new Stony Brook Southampton Hospital Emergency Facility is officially open and up and running at its location at 400 Pantigo Road in East Hampton. The project has been especially helpful and convenient for our East End Emergency Medical personnel as it cuts the travel time of a typical traditional ambulance call to Southampton by about half. It is my understanding that over the first weekend of the new East Hampton E. R.’s being open, it cared for over 150 patients.

Speaking about Emergency Medical Services, I would like to give a special shout out to our Company No. 4 personnel who did one heck of a job over this year’s Fourth of July weekend. They handled over thirty-five calls for service during the Holiday weekend. These calls ranged from minor to very serious incidents. They even took the time to respond to assist the Amagansett Fire Department EMS when they had trouble fielding a crew. Great Job!

Montauk Fire Department was also ready to standby for fire suppression, Emergency Medical Services and traffic control for this year’s Fourth of July fireworks. Unfortunately, they were postponed until this fall. We will be ready to help out when they are rescheduled.

On Monday, June 23rd we had a delicious barbecue at the firehouse to kick off the summer. It was a very nice affair attended by over 100 members, their family and friends. Thank you to John Rutkowski and his House Committee members for putting on this annual event.

That’s it for this month’s Montauk Fire Department Corner. Enjoy the rest of this beautiful summer, and please stay safe.
