Good day and welcome to this month’s edition of the Montauk Fire Department Corner. I hope that everyone is enjoying the summer and has had nice and safe Memorial Day and Fourth of July celebrations.

Earlier this month I had the honor of being asked to present scholarships to four graduating high school seniors from Montauk at the annual East Hampton High School awards ceremony.  It was especially gratifying as it is the fifty-fifth year that the Montauk Fire Department has awarded scholarships. This is an amazing record and I would like to personally thank Herb Herbert who has led the scholarship committee as chairman since it’s inception in 1970. Congratulations to the entire EHHS graduation class. GO BONAC! This year’s scholarship recipients are:

Skip Cannon scholarship – Mackenzie Lenahan

John Mulligan scholarship – Audrey Smith

Don Truesdale scholarship – Nube Montalega-Quinto

Hank Zebrowski scholarship – Olivia Walsh

As we all know June 1st begins hurricane/severe weather season. Please take the time to visit the following sites: FEMA Make A Plan at www.ready.gov/plan; Local National Weather Service at www.weather.gov/okx; National Hurricane Center at www.nhc.noaa.gov. If you follow a few simple steps, you will ensure that you and your family will be as prepared as possible for any storm that may come our way.

Congratulations to our department Treasurer and Company No. 6 Lieutenant, Dick White who was honored in June as the Montauk Village Association’s Man of the Year. Well deserved, Dick!

Congratulations to the Montauk Fire Department-sponsored little league team, who just completed a successful, winning season in the East Hampton Town Little League competition. Many thanks to coaches Nick Finazzo and Asa Gosman for steering these lads to a successful season.

Congratulations to Company No.6 Fire Police member Joe Dryer who was recently installed as the president of the Montauk Point Lions Club. Alongside Joe are fellow members of the Montauk Fire Department, Lisa Valcich and Rich Schoen. The Montauk Lions is an outstanding organization that collaborates with our Fire Department on several events, not the least of which is our Annual Senior Citizens Holiday Dinner. If you are looking to give something back to the community, you may want to take consider joining the Montauk Point Lions Club.

Well, that’s if for this month’s Montauk Fire Department Corner. Stay safe this summer and enjoy the lovely summer in Montauk.
