A new novel by East Hampton’s own Nanci LaGarenne

A recurring theme in books by Nanci LaGarenne include strong women who stand up and speak out for themselves and others. Cheap Fish, Refuge, The Bitter End, as well as her last novel Scape Ghost all highlight women with a captivating story; intertwining struggle, love, strength and accomplishments. Her newest work, Mothering Pirates is no exception.

Gaining inspiration from her travels to both Ireland and the California Delta region, Ms. LaGarenne has created a tale about best friends River and Lexi – descendants of famous pirates Anne Bonny and Grace O’Malley. Kinsale, Ireland is home to the girls, but River’s journey to California ultimately takes them both on an unexpected adventure in the Cali Delta. Mystery, multiple pirate connections and discoveries, new relationships, secrets, and unseen truths keeps the reader invested throughout.

Once again, LaGarenne weaved an intriguing tale. Incorporating informative background throughout, she provides the reader with a greater understanding about the lives of the actual pirates, thus illuminating the ancestorial similarities with her characters.

According to a google search, “Anne Bonny and Grace O’Malley were two women who defied societal norms and became renowned pirates. Anne Bonny, a Caribbean pirate in the early 18th century, is known for her partnership with “Calico Jack” Rackham. Grace O’Malley, an Irish chieftain’s daughter in the 16th century, was a skilled seafarer and leader who even met with Queen Elizabeth I. Both women achieved notoriety during a time when women were largely excluded from such roles.”

Mothering Pirates is a great summer read- light, yet engaging, and filled with mystery, love, and adventure. Will River and Lexi live up to their pirate blood and be courageous and daring, or will secrets destroy their life-long friendship?
