What a season so far and there’s lots more to come! For yet another year the School Bluefin Tuna have not disappointed. The best part is that there’s more than one spot to go to. You also don’t have to travel 30-50 miles offshore. Look for the Whales & Porpoise, because that’s where the bait fish are. Giant schools of Sand Eels, Boston Mackerel, and Squid is what they’re feeding on and it’s in abundance! South of Block Island, west of the Block Island windmills has been loaded with whales and porpoise. The school Bluefin are right in there with them. Another productive area is just south of CIA and Habb’s Ledge.
Again, look for the Bird life and sea mammals, the Schoolies will not be far away. Anglers that have been using Diamond jigs and Ronzies are getting good results. Also live bait like Mackerel, Ling, Whiting, & Small Bluefish work very well. Schoolies will tear into the Ling & Whiting and the bigger Giant Tuna love the Cocktail Bluefish & Mackerel. When putting your baits out it’s important to keep an eye on your fathometer to see what depth the Tuna are coming through at. This is very important, so you’ll want to stagger your baits at different levels in the water column, that way you’re covering as much area under the boat as possible. Use sinkers attached to the line with light rubber bands and use the proper weight for the amount of wind and current you have that day. You then can separate them by using balloons much like shark fishing, thus avoiding tangles. There’s nothing like it when the Tuna takes the bait and the balloon goes down, then it takes that screaming first run, to get that adrenaline flowing! That’s why we all love targeting Tuna.
Back inshore the Striped Bass have been elusive but the big Bluefish just rolled into town and they are giving everyone a huge tussle. Diamond jigs and bucktails will get the job done. It’s great to see the big schools of Bluefish again.
Fluke fishing has been fairly good if you keep moving around playing the tide, definitely better than it’s been. While waiting for the Fluke to come along the Porgy and Black Sea Bass have been filling the gap. Bottom fishing this season has been excellent and the young anglers absolutely love it because its instant gratification and keeps them busy!
