Flow Surf Academy
“We’re all equal before a wave.” – Laird Hamilton
On Saturday, June 13th, Sole East Resort will graciously host this summer’s fundraiser for Flow Surf Academy, beginning at 5pm. The evening will feature live music, a silent auction, raffle, and a coastal summer BBQ as a backdrop to the community gathering for a meaningful cause.
California based Flow Surf Academy has launched an East Coast Chapter, spearheaded by Bob Miller to expand their mission from coast to coast. With data proving their approach, Flow shares the belief that through the community, the healing power of the ocean helps every person gain independence, confidence and a stronger sense of self through surfing. In the supportive environments cultivated by Flow instructors and volunteers, neurodiverse individuals share therapeutic surf experiences and the joy of catching waves together.
Here in Ditch Plains, the Montauk Flow Surf Academy is committed to growing the summer program for participants to learn to surf, engage with the ocean, and build meaningful connections with one another and the community. In Montauk the model boasts a ‘near-peer’ format for students and young adults to mentor ‘athletes’ with peer feedback, shared experiences and building connections. Many athletes describe feeling more ‘seen’ in these experiences, and the bond among the group exists in and out of the water. Also unique in Montauk is a year-round and varied program with swim lessons in the winter and expanding to sailing programs that underscore the many ways of connecting to the sea.
Lessons in the summer in Ditch Plains are every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30am-12:30pm beginning July 7th through August 20th and is completely free for families with required registration. Surfers inherently understand the transformative power of the ocean, and this is an impactful way to share it.
Flow Surf Academy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides surf therapy and transformational surfing experiences for neurodiverse individuals, children, and adults with special needs. Headquartered in Ventura, California, the academy focuses on building confidence, independence, and inclusion through adaptive sports programs.
