Surf Safety Day
The East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue and the Surfrider Foundation Eastern Long Island Chapter hosted Surf Safety Day at Marram Hotel in Montauk on a sunny Sunday in October. The day was a refresher as well as presentation of new information about ocean and surf awareness to keep everyone safe in the water.
Local surfers, beach goers and swimmers were welcomed to join and learn more about the challenges of playing in the ocean. By creating and maintaining awareness, the community is stronger and more successful to keep one another safe. Recognizing and understanding rip currents, practicing rescue techniques and using accessible equipment for rescues were imperative pieces of information that could save and have saved lives on the beach and in the ocean.
T.J. Calabrese and Bob Miller led lessons on CPR, water rescue techniques and reviewed skills for the attendees new to the water as well as seasoned surfers in the already close surf community for an afternoon of information and practice. As a local community and ambassadors to our beaches, there was an emphasis on the shared responsibility to educate and help others enjoying the east end. And most of all to keep everyone safe. Happy surfing!
