Montauk Fire Department Corner: May 2021

Welcome to this month’s edition of Montauk Fire Department Corner. I hope you all had a safe and happy Passover and Easter. I am sure you, like me, are happy to have the more pleasant weather upon us. Summer is just around the corner, the COVID-19 virus threat seems to have reduced, and more and more citizens have been getting vaccinated. Please be careful on the roads as our population begins its seasonal increase. We want everyone to have a safe summer.

We have a special article in this month’s edition. I would like to thank Honorary Chief Richard Lewin for putting this tribute together. The article honors the eight active Montauk Fire Department fire and EMS personnel who are still serving their community at the age of eighty or older. Here it is, courtesy of Fire News.

On a sad note, I am sorry to report that fifteen-year member, and Ex-Captain of Company No. 1, Bernie Ray has answered his last alarm. Bernie passed away at this home in Montauk on Monday, April 4, 2021. On behalf of the officers and personnel of the Montauk Fire Department I want to extend our sincere sympathy to Bernie’s wife Sheila, and to the entire Ray family. Bernie was a good fireman, friend, and man. He will be sorely missed.

This wraps up this month’s Montauk Fire Department Corner. I hope you and yours have a fun and safe Memorial Day celebration. Please remember, as always, to pull over to the shoulder to give right of way to all emergency vehicles. See you next month.

~ Mitchell Valcich, Chief, Montauk Fire Department
