Good day and welcome to this month’s edition of the Montauk Fire Department Corner.
I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful summer we are having in Montauk. The weather and peaceful atmosphere have been really nice so far, so please let’s keep it that way.
On June 16th members of the Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Gravesend Avenue. Upon arrival, the entire attached garage and some of the main living area of the house were engulfed in flames and smoke. Fortunately, a quick-thinking neighbor was able to alert the residents of the house and to safely get her and her dog out of the house before they were injured. The Montauk Fire Department took over after that and quickly got the fire under control and ultimately extinguished it. A big shout out to Mike Ciccariello who alerted the residents, and a great job for the men and women of the Montauk Fire Department for quickly putting out the fire, keeping the damage to a minimum.
On Saturday, June 27th members of the Montauk Fire Department had a BBQ and “Wet Down” to celebrate and welcome new fire apparatus into the Department. This is an age-old tradition that is said to give the Department and its Members good luck. The new apparatus consists of two pumpers, assigned to Companies Nos. 1 and 2, a new tanker, assigned to Company No. 3 and a new ambulance assigned to Company No. 4. 
Additionally, we “Wet Down” our parade vehicle, a replica of the HMS Culloden. It was a really great day, and I’d like to thank everyone who helped out and attended.
On Saturday, June 13th and on Sunday, July 19th the Montauk Fire Department Fire Police and Ambulance company assisted with traffic control and emergency medical services for both the Mighty Montauk and Montauk Lighthouse triathlons. The Mighty Montauk was celebrating its 44th anniversary of the race and the Lighthouse was celebrating its 30th year. We are happy to be able to participate in such local and worthwhile events.
That’s it for this month’s edition. Just one safety tip before I go. Please listen and watch out for, and pull over for, emergency vehicles when you are driving. Our personnel are on our roads in emergency situations quite a bit during these busy months. By pulling over and letting Fire and Police emergency vehicles pass, it makes us and the entire motoring public safer.
