The Tuma Family is well known in Montauk. Both Frank & Bob Tuma were pioneers in Montauk’s fishing industry. Along with many others that started shortly after WWII. Bob Tuma was very knowledgeable in the old school ways, so here’s what I’m getting at. The rule is: Whatever the current conditions are at daybreak the day of each seasonal solstice (spring, summer, fall, winter) that will be the predominate norm for that quarter. So on the 21st of June this year the weather at daybreak was dead calm, mostly clear, light SW wind if any at all. This I was very happy about being as how last year in 2024 it was blowing NE 15-20, & rainy, on that day, and we ended up with a lot of easterly wind pretty much the whole season! Let’s see how the old school plays out this season!

Fishing is red hot, Striped Bass, Bluefish of all sizes can be caught all around the point and the south side. Diamond Jigging has been exceptionally productive when the birds make up, usually at the beginning or at the end of the flood (incoming) tide. Huge Porgy have also been eating the Diamond jigs, and sometimes the length of the Diamond Jig exceeds the length of the Porgy!! LOL!
Good news on the Fluke front, action seems to be off to a better start than last season. Cartwright lit up for a few days, with some really nice fish coming over the rails. South side has been producing, but you have to drill it out when the tide is right. Frisby has shown some consistency both at inner & outer. But once again you have to be there when the tide and the wind are cooperating. There’s plenty of bait all over the south side & all around the point, holding the fish in our area.
The Offshore report is still kind of slow, some Tuna are being seen, a few have been caught, but for the most part it hasn’t started cranking just yet, but I imagine it’s going to bust open any day now!! Early season trolling spreader bars are the ticket, later on in mid-August through September they’ll start eating the chunks. Shaping up to be another great season, so don’t miss out!
Just a final thought, be courteous when running up for another drift when you’re in a fleet of boats, there’s really no rush, thirty seconds more doesn’t make a difference, & you’ll be doing proper etiquette. You are responsible for your wake & if someone gets hurt as a result of your wake, you could be libel!!
