DHR 1658…a western bourbon experience in a bottle

by Sue Giustino

The Deep Hollow Ranch is the oldest working ranch in the U.S.A. Established in 1658, its history is rich. Still today it’s a wonderful Montauk destination, providing family fun for kids of all ages; from Pony Rides to the notorious Beach Trail Ride. Deep Hollow Ranch is located just outside of Montauk Village- about half-way to the Montauk Lighthouse. Sitting amidst thousands of preserved acres of spectacular Suffolk County coastal parkland, Deep Hollow Ranch welcomes visitors from all over the world.

Pat and Cate

Today, and for the past 13 years, Patrick and Cate Keogh have run the ranch. They met years ago when they were both working at the ranch, got married right next door, and now operate the ranch together with help from their children, Francesca, Broudy and Rohan.

In addition to the daily chores associate with a barn full of horses, Cate manages the riding stable business; offering guided trail rides, group events, and pony rides. Patrick, along with his son Broudy are deeply involved in the world of cutting:  a modern equestrian competition requiring a horse and rider to separate a single cow from a herd of cattle and prevent it from getting back to the herd. Traveling around the country with their own horses, they compete and often rank high in cutting shows.

Sometime in 2021 Cate began envisioning ways to branch out from the ranch in an artistic way. As avid connoisseurs of fine American whiskeys, together she and Pat embarked on a new adventure- creating their own bourbon. What better choice than their ‘spirit of choice’ which goes so well with the western lifestyle.

Two years later, February 2023, Cate decided to get the ball rolling. She contacted artistic designer Walter Lindveld, who used Cate’s vision to design the label. To guide them through the process, he directed them to Roy Daleo- who helps up and coming small labels. Eventually, they connected with Paul Monohan of Matchbook Distillery in Greenport. Together with Paul, they came up with the perfect bottle and recipe.

Now, just a year later, with an outstanding label featuring Patrick cutting with his horse Misty, the Keoghs are ready to begin selling their dream: DHR1658 BOURBON. A craft, single oak barrel-aged bourbon with beautiful aromas; the notes of banana, ginger, pepper, and a hay finish that carries the traditions and honors the heritage of Deep Hollow Ranch. https://DHR1658.com/
