A Journey Through Books with Sue Giustino: November 2026

Whistler      by Ann Patchett

Acclaimed American author Ann Patchett has written numerous bestselling novels, nonfiction works, and children’s books. Her writing often explores family relationships, loss, the lasting impact of the past, and the dynamics of unconventional families—themes that take center stage again in her latest novel, Whistler.

An unexpected encounter between middle-aged English teacher Daphne Fuller and her former stepfather, Eddie, sets the course for this moving novel. Through their unfolding interactions, Patchett masterfully sparks powerful emotions, stirring dormant memories and forcing difficult reflections on both new and lost relationships.

As Daphne’s reexamines her past, we relive her story through flashbacks to the 1980’s. Her mother’s lack of coping skills, a sister who is her lifeline through multiple stepfathers, as well as memories of a traumatic car accident leading to unclear circumstances surrounding Eddie’s sudden departure from her family. Patchett weaves this heartwarming tale of resistance while examining the deconstruction of family history, the complexities of love, and the power of unresolved grief.

While Ann Patchett’s 2026 novel Whistler is a simpler, more heartwarming tale, it still delivers the same evocative and thought-provoking depth that I enjoyed with Bel Canto, Tom Lake, and The Dutch House.
