 School of Surfers

Most surfers try to avoid the pack. Hiding secret spots from outsiders, scheduling when to surf to dodge the crowds, angling responsibilities to maximize off-peak surf periods. Often surfers can be considered antisocial. At the same time there is purposely surfing with friends, enjoying the camaraderie in the water, and being freaked out to paddle out totally alone. Surfers more likely resemble schools of fish than lone wolves. Which is why the idea of a signing up for an organized surf excursion is baffling those that love the sport.

Salty Godess Surf Camp on Namotu Island Fiji, Surf Simply in Costa Rica, Tropic Surf with locations all over the most beautiful spots in the world are just a few examples of programs for surfers to explore new places and focus on surfing. As one local notes, “why not go on an organized tour to have access AND priority in otherwise unobtainable spots?”  Another surfer disagreed, “why go on a trip when I’m forced to hang with strangers and surf with people at all different levels?”

It depends on where you go and what experience you are looking for.

For a novice that only feels comfortable surfing with an instructor, or needs help navigating a range of conditions, a private lesson within a group atmosphere in a far flung consistent break may be perfect. For more advanced surfers that want to work on specific skills or have lots of repetition, finding a program that gives feedback, finds waves according to your level and groups you with equal level surfers, a trip may be worth while. Advanced surfers may love the cushy entree to places not possible without a company behind them, or may discover new places not yet on their radar such as the Pulau Tropic Surf Four Seasons Explorer boat trip.

One common caveat is the trips that pack in too much; group meals with an agenda, yoga and mediation workshops, nutrition focus and mind-body awareness activities. While these are all worthwhile endeavors, they may serve as “filler” or detract from what surfers really want; waves.

According to a local surfer, “if you dabble in surfing and want to be associated with surfing more than you actual want to surf, then go for the Nosara-esque surf-yoga trip.”  Another recommended something like Tropic Surf if you want to experience new places, different boards, and gorgeous locations. Tropic Surf leaves the pampering to the resort, while they focus on the waves. While there is still time before summer and a trip is a consideration, pick a break that you have dreamed of or never heard of and take it from there.

Happy surfing!
