Shred The Love

The 27th Annual Rell Sunn contest held in Ditch Plains in Montauk on July 19th was an all-around smashing success. Always run by volunteers, this year’s goal was to raise money for Shred the Love, a charity that supports the less fortunate in the Montauk community.
The contest is named after Hawaiian surfer Rell Sunn, a pioneer in women’s competitive surfing and eventually known for raising awareness for breast cancer. The tradition in Montauk since the contest’s inception was to gather for a day of surfing and celebrating in the water while raising funds for local families experiencing hardship. Donations make a substantial impact for those that need it most.
The day began at 8:00am with heats lasting through the afternoon. Along with friendly competition the day is a chance for the community to enjoy the beautiful beach day filled with an art auction, food and local merchandise while watching the competition. The spirit of the day is honoring the memory of surfers that have passed on and to remember lost friends and family while enjoying the contest.
Shred The Love, a 501 c (3) nonprofit represents what the Rell Sunn competition day exhibits, community, love of surfing and uplifting others. It is that spirit of Aloha that Shred the Love embodies to aid locals that need it. The Board of Directors include Scott Cullen, Laurie Cancellieri, Jen Cardona, John and Jasie Britton and Claire Pertalion. Thanks to all of you that continued the spirit of Aloha by participating and contributing to the Montauk Community. Happy Surfing!
