Chase, the Sunn
The 28th Annual Rell Sunn Surf Contest that takes place every July in Ditch Plains is a highlight of the summer, and this year did not disappoint. Families, friends and the surf community join for friendly competition, a day of waves while raising money for Shred the Love, the foundation that hosts the competition.
This year was especially poignant for the 28th Anniversary, celebrating the life and legacy of Alison Seiffer-Spacek, the illustrator that designed the iconic artwork for Rell Sunn competitions for over a decade. It was also a day of exceptionally clean, small waves that stayed consistent throughout the day. 
The art auction including pieces by Dalton Portella, John Britton, Connie Cortese, Sally Richardson and a Walden surfboard from Stu Foley, raising over $11,000. All money raised from the competition supports Shred the Love, a local nonprofit organization that benefits local school children and aids families in crisis.
Over eighty athletes participated, over thirty judges volunteered; some surfers competed in multiple events, all dedicated to the community uniting and kids vying for placement in their heats. Emperor / Empress of the Jetty was a special event added this year, open to adults, professional, competitive and sponsored surfers. Montauk’s Chase Lieder was the winner along with Chloe Coleman. Tucker Coleman was informally the Best in Show for his shortboarding!
