Hoards and Hoards of Sand Eels, Squid, Boston Mackerel, Porpoise, Minkie Whales, Finback, and Humpbacks with the Bluefin Tuna right there with them is making quite the show not too far offshore! The Whales are in groups making bubble circles corralling the baitfish, then they all come up with their mouths open, engorging themselves on the bounty!
It’s a real-life Discovery channel scenario going on right here in our backyard! Most of the action has been just south of Block Island by the southern batch of Windmills. Loads of sand eel schools are also to be found just south of CIA and by Habb’s Ledge. Porpoise and Finback whales have been working that area. There’s some school Bluefin lurking about, but not in the big numbers that have been there the past few years. Nevertheless, if you go early and drill it out, you will probably get a bite, that’s fishing!
Back inshore the amount of bait is equally amazing. All along the south side, north to Cerberus shoal, all the way over to Block Island and beyond! The Fluke have started to wake up somewhat on all of the spots. When conditions are right there can be a good Fluke bite. Between the short Fluke and the numerous Black Sea Bass, the action has been very good on just about everywhere you go.
It’s a great time to bring the young anglers out to learn a skill and have some fun making lifelong memories. That’s why the Yearly Montauk Grand Slam Charity Tournament is such a Home Run for the young anglers in Montauk. The camaraderie, the friendly competition, the opportunity for the young anglers to hone their skills fishing in a competition is endless. The smiles on their faces at the awards event say it all! Thank you Henry Uihlein, Rick White, all the others on the staff, and the Kiwanis Club for all the hard work putting on a great tournament!!
Bottom fishing has been the go-to lately, Porgy, Black Sea Bass, and Fluke are to be found just about everywhere. South side, off the point, under the light, pretty much any hard bottom you find will be holding fish.
We’ve still got plenty of summer left, take a kid fishing and they’ll love you forever!
