Wow! Where do I start? How about that Tuna fishing!! We thought the last two years was good, this season it’s been nothing short of spectacular. Granted the bag limit is 2 per boat per day, but the action can’t be better. Between the porpoise, whales, birds all lighting up the area, sure makes for a great show. The Bluefin Tuna have been spread out over quite a few different areas now and that makes it a little less congested. Habb’s ledge, the west bank of the Butterfish hole, Outer CIA, and east to the Gully and even the Tuna Ridge. With the water warming up the Mahi-Mahi are now showing up on the lobster gear High Flyers, not only delicious eating, but a great acrobatic fight on light tackle spinning gear. Simply grab some spearing along with squid chunks and you’ll be in business. Toss out the spearing to get their attention, then cast out the squid chunks and you will be hooked up instantly!! As summer progresses and the water gets warmer chance encounters with the “Triple Tail” (which kind of resembles a fresh water Oscar fish), can happen. These funky looking fish that hang around floating debris, and the Lobster gear are incredibly delicious, but can be finicky as well. If you are lucky enough to hook one, you are in for a treat!!

Further offshore out in the Canyons this past July full moon produced some really nice Big Eye Tuna and Swordfish. Action was spread out with them too! Hudson Canyon, Block Canyon, and Atlantis Canyon. Wherever the bait is concentrated, along with the Porpoise and Pilot whales that’s where you’ll find the Tuna. It can look and feel bad trolling for hours without a bite, but if you stick with the Porpoise and Pilot whales drilling it out and don’t go wandering off, you will get rewarded!
Back inshore the Striped Bass have been a little elusive around the Point, the next full moon night action should heat back up with cooperative Striped Bass. As in past years as the water temperature heats up the Bass look for the cooler water during the day, that makes the live eel fishing at night more productive. Black Sea Bass and Porgy have been biting their heads off. Just about anywhere you find a rock pile that hasn’t been hit hard, they will be there waiting for your bait.
Fluke fishing has been a little better than the past couple of years. It’s not red hot by any means, but there’s been decent action out in Cartwright, Rocky Hill, Frisby, inner and outer. The deeper water areas seem to be holding the bigger fish that can be kept.
So far the Old School weather prediction is holding true, lots of great fishing and weather up ahead for this season, so get out there and have some fun!!
