Fishing Montauk with Captain Skip 🎣

For the most part the rain has finally let up and some really nice weather replaced it. Along with that came some really good fishing. The Striped Bass showed up, giving anglers some great action. The smaller fish came first providing steady Diamond Jig action all around the Point. Elbow, Slot, and Great eastern were the locations. The bigger fish soon after, all around the same locations. Live eels were working well when the tide was running right. Trolling Parachutes are very effective when the squid are around, and it’s great for cardiovascular exercise! Had a couple of extremely hot days that kind of slowed things down, but the fish will respond again. Loads of baitfish are all over the Point area, and hoards of Bunker and Chub Mackerel are all over the south side by Inner and Outer Frisbee. They can also be found around the pocketbook and outer Shagwong.

Fluke fishing is still hot and cold. Cartwright, Inner Frisbee, Porgy Lump, North rips all producing fish. The North Rips have great action, you just have to weed through a ton of 16″-18″ fish. Great action for the youngsters and great practice.

While waiting for your Fluke bite there is no shortage of Black Sea Bass. They are everywhere, you have to be hard pressed not to get your limit these days. Use a high-low double hook bottom rig to catch these tasty critters. Squid and Clams work the best as well as Sea Robin chunks and Chub Mackerel chunks. The limit is still 3 fish per person at 15 inches.

The offshore report is great too! Shark fishing is really steady along with some school Bluefin tuna thrown in the mix. Butterfish hole, first finger, 30 fathom edge, all good locations to fish.

The Canyon report this season has been the best in quite a few years. Granted they are very far, but if you have the boat to do it, you may have a fantastic trip. 150-180 miles is where they are for now. East Atlantis, Hydrographers is the location. Nice Big Eyes, big Yellowfins, White Marlin, plenty of great action. Not much of a night bite, day trolling lures and baits is what’s working.

With the exception of an occasional rain storm, the winds have been calm and the fish are biting!! So are the Flies by the way!! LOL so bring your can of  insect repellent!!

Tight Lines, Captain Skip
