The Surfrider Foundation

Eastern Long Island Chapter, held our first annual Interscholastic Surf Games on Saturday, June 9, 2007 at Ditch Plains Beach in Montauk. Sixty students from eight Long Island schools came out to compete for the title of Long Island's best school surf team, while having fun in the water and raising awareness and money for the chapter. Each participant received a one year membership to the Surfrider Foundation along with great food, SOBE water and other fun prizes. Teams included The Montauk School, The Ross School, Southampton High School, Bayshore High School, William Floyd High School, Sag Harbor, Riverhead and Westhampton.

Marine biologist and Surfrider Foundation member, Joe Warren, from Stony Brook University in Southampton was on hand to talk to all the students about the Surfrider Foundation's mission and its Respect the Beach program.
The surf on Saturday was classic Ditch Plains - 2 foot with clean but slow peaks. Unfortunately, an electrical storm blew in mid-way through the contest forcing us to finish the event on Sunday morning.
A team of expert judges was assembled by contest co-organizer Jay Fruin that included Tony Caramanico, Kathy Engstrom, Dalton Portella, Steve White, Tom Cassidy, Sean Fruin, Danny DiMauro, Eugene Alper and Phil McConnell. Chapter secretary Jay Levine sat on the sidelines and tallied the scores.
Chapter member and event co-organizer Bruce Lieberman worked hard to collect raffle prizes from local sponsors including Equilibrium Surf Shop, Espos, Main Beach, Sunrise to Sunset, Viking Fleet, The Publick House, Roxy, Sobe, Rist Liquors and Corwith Farms that raised an additional $1000 for the chapter. Thanks to all these sponsors for their support! Thanks to Jimmy Olson, Rip Curl and Equilibrium Surf Shop for arranging the color coded rashies to make judging easier.
We thank all of our other volunteers including Walt Bridges, Marilyn Levine, Peggy Fruin, Ron Parisi, Marilyn and Mike Lieberman for their invaluable help making our first contest a huge success.
We look forward to doing it all again next year with more schools from around Long Island and the lightning coming from the surfers and not the sky.
