What your itchy pet is trying to tell you...
There is a lot of itching going on with our pets right now. At our clinic over half of the appointments are itching patients (and sometimes owners!!)
Itching is a common sign of many different problems. To give you a better idea lets use the word ITCHY to try and discuss them all:
I=Infection: All this itching has scratched open the top layer of your pets skin and has let the normal staph bacteria into the usually protected lower layers of skin where the bacteria can now grow and spread.
T=Time of Year: Yes, animals suffer with seasonal allergies just like us.
C=Critters: The leading cause of skin infections is still Fleas! And as we all know tick bites itch for days or weeks. Mites (chiggers and sarcoptic mange) causes an intense itching of the limbs and undercarriage. And don’t forget mosquitoes are very hungry at dusk and dawn!
H=Habitat: Sometimes it’s our environment that makes us itch, whether it’s the sand and salt from a day at the beach or the dustmites in the pet bedding.
Y=Yeast: The black stuff in itchy ears and in between toes is very itchy, and often a secondary result of internal allergies to food or environmental allergens. Beef, wheat and dairy are the top 3 dog food allergens. Beef, dairy, fish the top 3 cat allergens.
So by now you are probably itchy from reading this…so here are somes ways you can help:
1) Year round flea, tick, mite prevention
2) Always give a cool water rinse after beach time
3) Wash pet bedding weekly
4) Know what you are feeding your pets
5) Get to a vet if it’s an infection.
Wishing you and all your pets an itch free September!
