Some tips from her shows: If you're concerned that getting older means going downhill, consider this: Aging is inevitable, decay is optional. "If you want to live like fifty until you're eighty, take charge of your body," says Dr. Henry Lodge in his book YOUNGER NEXT YEAR. Exercise six days a week; strength train at least two days; spend less than you make; stop eating junk; care, connect and commit. This process isn't really bad. The exercise part may sound awful, but it isn't. But the other big bonus is the laughter and love that follow really are fun. Good health and longevity are largely in your hands. Of all the qualities that make one person more likeable than another, nothing rates higher than listening more than talking. Likewise, the tongue as a small part of the body wages great power." These images alone make you want to "bite your tongue" before speaking out. Many believe that the highest form of wisdom is listening. The savviest networkers create connections by listening. They are folks who use two ears and one mouth proportionately. In negotiations, the word "No" works. Doubt me? Then think. You say to your child, "Go to bed". She says, "No". Ten more minutes, you repeat: "Go to bed". She says, "No". Five more minutes, you say, "Okay". In the end your child got what she wanted. Every child hears "No" as the start, not the end of the negotiation. As an adult, you fear "No". But "No" makes room for problem solving. You say to a co-worker, "I need your help, but it's okay. Feel free to say, "No". Co-worker says, "I am busy but what do you need?" "'No', the word you have been taught to fear, will change your negotiating life forever," claims Jim Camp, author of NO, THE ONLY NEGOTIATING SYSTEM YOU NEED FOR WORK AND HOME. Are you a multi-tasking parent starved for time? The authors of PEEING IN PEACE devised this Mommy Wish List: Office hours for pediatricians, 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Fewer homework hassles. A vaccine to stop moaning and whining. Stores that sell winter clothes in winter and summer clothes in summer. Parents who stop competing to throw the most extravagant children's birthday parties. A micro-chip to instantly plop your child's backside in his car seat. And kids content to wear to school what you laid out for them the night before. Boss driving you nuts? Juggling work and kids? Caring for a sick parent? You may be asking yourself, "Is it possible to have balance in my life?" Dr. Dale Atkins says, "Yes." Picture yourself on a seesaw. You and someone else shift and reshift for a delicate balance. "Sneeze" and the momentary balance is gone. So it is with life. But being nice is not wimpy and it's not being a doormat. Rather, being nice is about being mindful of others' needs. It's the small kindnesses and the compliments that bring smiles and plant seeds in people's minds about you. When President Lincoln was asked if he was tired of signing autographs, he replied, "Men stand for a long time when being flattered." True then. True now. And the person you're being nice to? You never know his/her power. Nice guys do finish on top. You know how it feels when work is working. You also know how the reverse feels. Your day feels like a black hole. Let's cut to the chase. Email is the biggest time sucker of the modern workday. Email comes with a sense of now. Still, that doesn't mean you must answer now. Technology shouldn't rule you. In fact, "The best way to boost productivity is to avoid email for the first hour," says Julie Morgenstern, in NEVER CHECK EMAIL IN THE MORNING. When your first hour plays to your drumbeat, you're in charge. If your livelihood depends on checking email first, then adjust the "no email zone" to the next available hour. Victory over the start of your day, establishes control over the rest of your day. Last year Hallmark sold eighty-five thousand Happy One-Hundredth Birthday Cards. Your retirement may seem way down the road, but it really isn't. So why not do some transition thinking now? Could you turn your hobby into money making? How can you start improving your health and fitness now? What expenses will you be able to reduce? Are you saving? IRA'S and 401K's are plans that can help allay retirement's biggest fear.
