Senior Nutrition Center Reopens

After being closed for sixteen months due to the Covid pandemic, Montauk’s Senior Nutrition Center, located at the Playhouse, finally opened its doors on July 12, to happy and grateful seniors. Seventeen young-at-heart attendees including my husband and I, were treated to a special lunch of home cooked zitti and meatballs, toasted, Italian, buttered bread, and freshly cut, cube sized, zucchinis, lovingly prepared by Executive Director and Temporary Chef, Therese Jarmain. Most wore their Sunday best, getting reacquainted with their long time friends, carrying on like teen agers who have not seen each other since their high school prom.

A huge red and blue poster on white background created by our own arts and crafts artist, Nolda Vivo with the writings, “Welcome Back To Nutrition Center” dedicated to Old Friends and New Friends, served as the backdrop for the long awaited, freshly baked, to-die-for, strawberry, short cake from the Montauk Bake Shoppe. Instead of the traditional, end of the month, birthday greeting, the cake was decorated with a “Welcome Back” saying, topped with juicy, red, strawberries. Thank you, Board Member Aster Stein, for hand delivering the cake, and for having the patience to drive on Main Street in July.

The Center is open for lunch on Monday to Friday from 11:00a.m. to 1p.m. Chair yoga is taught by Tsuyumi Kobayashi on Mondays and Fridays starting from 10:45a.m to 11:30a.m. In addition, a Wellness Program in collaboration with Southampton Hospital and Ed & Phyllis Davis Wellness Institute, offers a Healing Circle Hour given by Margaret Ianacone from East Hampton Human Services, every Tuesday starting at 1:00p.m. The program includes meditation, yoga, reiki and tai chi for better balance. Soon, card games, bingo, domino and mahjong will be scheduled accordingly. Transportation is available.

NOTE: The Center is looking for a paid, year round, part time cook. If you would like to give back to the Montauk community, volunteers are needed to serve these well deserved seniors at least once a week, from 11:00a.m. till 1:00p.m.

Won’t you please join this energetic, 60 years and over group? You can dine and make new friends inside a bright, and beautifully decorated, dining room and be royally served on real china and silver ware for just $3.00. Kindly contact Ms. Jarmain at least 24 hours in advance at 631 668 1023, leave a message or e-mail her at mtksencenter@gmail.com.

Let’s hope that the rest of the year will be healthy and safe. I’ll be thinking of happy thoughts only 🙂
